A 20-Minute Yoga Session May Boost Your Brain Power

This is the title of an article that recently appeared in The Denver Post. These conclusions are based on a study conducted at the University of Illinois on 30 participants. Researchers wanted to test the ability to focus, retain and use new information after doing yoga for 20 minutes or walking/jogging for 20 minutes on a treadmill.

Participants who jogged/walked exercised on the treadmill at 60 to 70 percent of their max heart rate. Participants who practiced yoga did a sequence of seated, standing and supine postures followed by deep breathing and meditation.

Results showed the yoga participants to be significantly faster and more accurate on their tests than those who walked/jogged. If you’d like to read more about this research go to the June 5th issue of the Journal of Physical Activity and Health.

The Post article went on to say that separate studies have shown that yoga can reduce high blood pressure, soothe depression and help sleep problems.
